Adaptive Dance Classes
Adaptive dance classes at Heidi Knight School of Dance provide a fun and inclusive participation opportunity for students with various disabilities.
At weekly classes, Darby’s Dancers students learn different types of dance in a fun, encouraging atmosphere. The classes help build confidence, coordination, strength and lifelong friendships in a nurturing environment.
Our Adaptive Dance Classes offer:
- Small class sizes to ensure personalized attention
- Sensory accommodations (adjustable lighting and sound volume)
- Peer interaction and socialization opportunities
- Allowance of sensory tools (weighted vests, headphones, fidget items, etc.)
What is included?
HKSD is proud to provide this opportunity to each dancer and their family for the cost of the $50 Registration Fee. Everything else is provided through HKSD and generous community sponsors.
Every Darby's Dancers Student will receive:
- Enrollment in weekly dance class for current dance season with performance in the end of season HKSD Showcase.
- Dance attire (Leotard, shorts/leggings, T-Shirt)
- Dance shoes
- Showcase costume
FAQ
How does a child qualify to participate?
Participants must have a disability as identified in an IEP or Physician diagnosis and be cleared medically by physician to participate.
Extremely medically fragile individuals or those with concerning/dangerous behavioral issues are not permitted to participate for the safety of everyone.
What is the cost?
The family is only responsible for the $50 registration fee for their dancer. Everything else is included.
What should my dancer wear to class?
HKSD will work with each dancer to obtain proper dance shoes, leotard and tights during their 1st month of enrollment. Until their dance attire is ordered (within the 1st month of enrolling), dancers may wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move in and clean sneakers. Once their program/studio attire arrives, they are welcome to wear any of the items for class. HKSD will provide all needed costume parts for our annual Showcase in June.
Is attendance mandatory?
We encourage your dancer to attend as often as possible. We understand that occasionally missing class due to illness, family trips, or appointments is bound to happen. We request you let us know in advance whenever possible. There is typically a wait list of children wanting to dance with us, so limited attendance may result in being asked to reconsider your dancer's participation.
What are the qualifications of the Teachers?
Classes are taught by dance professionals who have been trained by the Darby's Dancers National Organization. The Darby's Dancer National training is designed with the best of intentions with participant safety our top priority.

What are the qualifications of the HKSD DD Dance Partners and will each participant have one?
Each DD dancer will be paired with one of our HKSD Dance Partners. They will have the same partner for the entire season to help them in class, however is needed, and be with them for any performances. The HKSD Darby's Dancers Dance Partners will receive training from the Darby's Dancers National Organization before being paired with a participant.
